Eraserhead

E and I fell in love with David Lynch via Twin Peaks, but really haven’t explored his movie catalogue, and with his passing, we’ve added a lot to our list. Spooktober gave us good reason to start with Eraserhead, Lynch’s first feature film. I’m glad we had seen Twin Peaks: The Return prior to as this just brazen bizarreness of some of the scenes Lynch throws at you is jarring, and that definitely prepared me better for this movie. It’s a horror movie certainly, and while it’s not exactly scary, it’s definitely disturbing. From the very beginning, something’s just off, and it’s really just an all around abrasive experience. Can’t say that I particularly enjoyed it, but it was quite thought provoking, and undeniably captured Lynch’s essence.

This is a tough movie to rate. I definitely appreciate it as an art piece, but that meant that watching it felt a lot more like work vs. entertainment - a lot to untangle here. Very much a vibes-based film, and reading more about it afterwards gave some much needed context. I’m glad we watched this to gain a better understanding of the great David Lynch, but wow is it weird!
