Train Dreams

Train Dreams is an incredible, must watch movie, that is absolutely deserving of its Best Picture nomination, and at the same time gave me so much melancholy, that my enjoyment of and rating of were decreased as a result. That might not be fair exactly to the movie, but it’s my rating, so I can do what I want with it. But I want to stress that’s it’s really worth watching. I’ve always enjoyed Joel Edgerton, and kind of wished he was in more prominent roles, and he really shows why that’s he’s deserving of that in Train Dreams. Also, William H Macy has a small but pivotal role in this as well, and it’s always a welcome sight to see him, which by the way he’s 75 years old now - and still looks as dapper as ever.

I really enjoyed the overall idea of this movie: telling the story of an average person who didn’t leave a massive legacy behind him, which is, of course, what will be true for most of us. Admittedly, watching this right after losing my great-uncle, who has left quite a legacy behind him, definitely made it hit differently. A lot to ponder here about the meaning of purpose and satisfaction in life. A very heavy, and maybe a little bit slow, but also beautiful story.
